Guys, my dad has been thrifting DECADES before Macklemore. Not that he doesn’t love singing along to Thrift Shop, mind you.
Growing up, most Saturdays with my dad were spent driving through neighborhoods looking for yard sales, learning how to haggle, and of course, at the Goodwill. My dad just loves thrifting. When the Goodwill got “cool” and everyone started going to find overalls and oversized sweaters…we’d been doing it for years! It just suddenly became acceptable to start boasting of our new $4 purse or designer thrifted coat. STILL I get at least a couple text messages a week with a picture of his latest idea or purchase. He doesn’t go a few days without stopping in his local thriftshop. Or of course…seeking out a new shop when he’s outside of his normal scope. My dad recently told me that he hasn’t bought something full price in several years. YEARS! My sister said one time she walked into a Target with him and they both realized within five minutes they should just go to Marshall’s because they were unwilling to buy something over $10.
Seriously, Kelsey and I pretend to be embarrassed (well, sometimes we actually are), but he finds some good stuff. Every time we see him he points out his newest purchase that he’s wearing and says, “Tommy Bahama…$7.” He’s out of control. From cheapo Vans shoes to an abundance of straw hats, my dad has a love affair with the Goodwill.
A lot of times friends will compliment my thriftiness or decorating skills in my house…but I honestly cannot take any credit. It’s mostly him. From piles of frames in my closet that I SWEAR I will get productive in filling soon to the legions of mirrors stacked in said closet, he is always picking up random stuff for us. So once this stuff really started to pile up, my friend Krysta and I decided to put it to good use. The only REAL things that I purchased with this wall in mind were the frames and prints courtesy of the lovely Abby Grace Photography. Everything else was lying around my house because my dad had dropped it off at one point or another.
So friends…here’s our gallery wall! (that will soon be moved because we’re moving!) And yes…that’s where Layla normally sits.
Window frame…courtesy of my dad. Canvas, painting by me. Our date was something I made for our wedding and then saw tacked up to our wall when we returned from our honeymoon. Guess who put it there? My dad.
Okay I lied :] Beautiful signage that everyone wrongly and graciously assumes I made…courtesy of Krysta!
My dad purchased those letters quite awhile ago and I finally got around to decorating them for the wall.
Frame on the bottom left was one that I made into a chalkboard…they came in a pack of four (from the Goodwill) if anyone’s interested :]
