As you probably know by now, about two weeks ago, David and I purposely and very spontaneously went off the map. Let me just say, we are not spontaneous people. We are terrible at trying new things and we’ll choose familiarity over new almost every time. I’m not very good at making plans and I’ve often got enough swirling around in my brain to keep me sufficiently overwhelmed without adding anything to it.
This summer was one of seemingly “well-laid” plans. Our weddings were relatively spread out through the summer, we had only one trip planned that didn’t include business, and I carefully scheduled the brand launch to coincide with our busy schedules. But unsurprisingly, plans did and plans do, they changed and they piled on. Between family visiting and business things shifting around, suddenly we only had a 4 day span to go on vacation…and it was less than 48 hours away! Yeah, that happened fast. But we decided to make the most of it and be SPONTANEOUS for once and head to the beach. David spent the day before leaving booking our travel and I spent it working super hard to make sure everything was done before we left.
Here’s the thing about being a small business owner…there’s always more to do. And that’s why, even though it wasn’t a “must,” we decided to prioritize rest over productivity and go on vacation. Only there can we turn off email for a couple days and just be with each other. There’s nothing like sand between your toes and salty beach hair to force you to turn your brain on off mode! Even though it was short, and probably at the most inconvenient time, I’m SO glad we got away. Our schedules aren’t going to slow down any time soon and we just knew we needed a little escape. And it actually provided motivation and inspiration to head back into the real world! It’s amazing what a little rest will do.
And I’m especially thankful for my husband who so easily could’ve said this was a bad idea, but instead, worked to make it happen for us! Hope you fellow creatives and big dreamers have gotten some off time this summer as well!
Here’s a little iPhone recap of our trip. I brought my big girl camera, but never pulled it out…and I’m thankful for that too :]
My husband’s a dork.
Both full days on the beach were mostly being sweaty, reading a ton, and dipping our toes in the ocean and trying not to think about sharks.
And nights were filled with delicious food. On the left is the best guacamole I’ve ever tasted 😀 Also pictured: a game of mini golf where I was an extremely sore loser.
The blurriest picture of one of the funniest moments from our mini vacay. Most people don’t know this…but I’m OBSESSED with magic. Like I love it. So much so that we made it a priority to go to a magic show. And after going to one at our hotel the first night that was terrible…we found a highly rated one the second night and David was a volunteer!!! He was very easily fooled by the magician, but I had a blast in the back row watching him get stumped.
Broadway at the Beach strolling and seeing Paper Towns made for the perfect last night.
Last early, cloudy morning on the beach :] Just sunburned and people watching at this point!
Two favorites: donuts and my Jobin.
